Tearing Down the Berlin Wall

On November 9th, 1989 over 2 million people poured over from East Germany into West Germany to celebrate the end of the Berlin Wall. During this weekend, parties took place and people began to physically tear down the concrete wall.  Although this event would not be traditionally considered a formal art practice, this event was a participatory event where people came together to tear down an oppressive government system that had been in place. It was through this celebration that two different groups of people were able to come together via this participatory and communal event. In the end, people such as my parents who were there during the tearing down of the Berlin Wall were able to take a piece of the wall home as symbols of people’s ability to counter governmental oppression and separation. The active participation and communion over this end of separation was democratically artistic in itself.
