Corporations who monopolize the purchasing of a raw material greatly affect the people who help produce that material. The art group SUPERFLEX attempted to counter this affect in the case of guaraná seeds. In collaboration with farmers who farm guaraná seeds, the group supported the creation of a local economy against the flourishing global one. By producing a drink that uses guaraná seeds, the group sought to reclaim the status of the material. And, even greater they were seeking to combat the drop in price of the seed. Creating a competing product disrupts the monopoly and gives power back to the farmers who produce the seeds.
