Homeless Vehicle

First shown at the Clocktower Gallery in NYC in 1988, Krzysztof Wodiczko’s Homeless Vehicle can serve as a cart and shelter for the homeless man who survives by collecting cans for a few cents each. The vehicle has four wheels and looks like a tricked-out supermarket cart; there is a compartment for a private toilet, collected cans, and it can extend into “sleeping mode” to provide a protected, temporary shelter at night. A goal of many of Wodiczko’s works is to show how the homeless are not to be blamed for their own condition bur rather, systemic class disparities are. His pieces typically call attention to the gentrification of cities, the unfairness of skyrocketing rents and the decrease of public housing systems, and Homeless Vehicle is no exception. Homeless Vehicle is not meant to be mass-produced; it is meant to educate the public about what issues the homeless face daily.
