“La Santa Puta,” Yesika Salgado, 2018

Pure unrestricted expression can be a holy thing. Democracy promises that, freedom of expression, freedom of being and not-being. The unfortunate reality for so many is that theoretical pure democratic freedom isn’t realized in their daily lives. Religion, culture, language, gender, age, etc. much of our freedoms are predetermined by our social identities. So much of our expected behavior is policed based on these identities. It is easy to say, “I don’t care what people think.” It is harder to enact that in a society where POC womxn speaking outright in the workplace is a risk to their employment, where latinx womxn embodying their wholehearted sexuality dehumanizes them into a puta, a slut. Salgado addresses this injustice in her poem, originally posted on her Instagram: @yesikastarr. She imagines the life a young girl coming into her fully realized sexual person, reclaimed the title of puta. What’s more, it isn’t just a reality where she is joyous and fulfilled, but one where she is praised as holy slut, that acknowledges her flourishing as a holy slutty glorious act.
