WetLand

In the spring of 2017, WetLand docked along Schuylkill River at Bartram’s Garden in Philadelphia. Mary Mattingly’s mission was to create a floating sculpture, living structure, and public space all in one to prove that thriving in a communal, sustainable urban area is possible. Her intentionally bold vision for the future drew the community in; built entirely from city waste WetLand boasted floating gardens, a water purification system, chickens and solar panels. Students maintained the water systems, residents tended to the garden, and locals were able to come and go all day. WetLand facilitated dialogue about living and learning together and called on visitors to contribute positively to the future of the planet. Mattingly reimagined water as a common space for living, learning, and working towards civic engagement with urban sustainability and by creating this microcosm made this lifestyle more easily accessible and understandable for the greater public.
