After stumbling upon a lost address book in the streets of Paris, artist Sophie Calle was inspired to try to understand its owner, Pierre D. Instead of returning the book, she decided to call every contact listed in it in order to piece together the story of Pierre D. Some of her phone calls were successful, while others were not, and she ended up meeting many of the contacts in public to discuss their relationships with Pierre D. Through these conversations, Calle explores the intimacy of human relations and loyalty, while questioning the boundaries of privacy. The willingness of these people to speak about Pierre D. not only begins to paint a portrait of him, but reveals something about the contacts as well. Why are they so willing to talk about Pierre D.? What are their motivations? Calle’s approach to this artwork is definitely unique and uncomfortable, but it allows her to intimately delve into the human condition — perhaps we all crave connection and understanding in a vast, confusing world.
