By making interventions directly into public space, public sculpture can be used strategically to call into question the very nature of that space. More specifically, how that space might fail its public. Oscar Tuazon’s contribution to Skulptur Projekte Munster in 2017 considers this question by drawing attention to the stark absence of a basic human need within the public sphere – fire. People communing around a source of warmth is a tradition whose collective memory extends universally across the history and geography of humankind. By building a fireplace in an industrial wasteland, Tuazon reinvested fire with its community-generating properties as a fixture of the public sphere. However, as a public resource its usage can also become subject to contestation from different parties. Ultimately, Burn the Formwork creates the conditions for the production of new publics through people’s diverse interactions with a resource at the basis of their common existence.
