Since Americans continue to live in a society underpinned by the lingering notion of the American Dream, where people work hard for themselves to achieve success, community gardens uproot this common ideology by instead underlining the importance of the collective–of sharing not only food and labor, but also community values, knowledge, and camaraderie. While community gardens are not a new phenomenon, more and more have been cropping up recently, especially in urban areas. These gardens provide many benefits that strengthen the overall health of communities. They foster environmental consciousness, educate about nutrition, mitigate food costs, improve food access, and allow for community building. By helping to distance Americans from fast-paced urban centers where time is capital that must be maximized, community gardens assert the importance of nourishing the body and the heart in a community environment. Gardens are therefore reclaiming what it means to nourish one’s body, care for a community, and use time in an enriching way.
