Conflict Kitchen uses the comforting power of food to catalyze productive conversation between community members about topics they may find uncomfortable. When diners have a meal at Conflict Kitchen they are not only enjoying food from a particular cultural heritage, but also entering a discursive space of geopolitical debate. Conflict Kitchen is a mobile restaurant, each iteration of which serves the cuisine from a country with which the United States is currently in conflict. The restaurant rotates cuisines every few months depending on the current status of geopolitical relations in the U.S.  The casual setting of a take-out restaurant serves as the backdrop for productive dialogue between publics. Cultural contexts are demystified for diners who receive their food in wrappers printed with interviews from natives of that context. The interviews highlight the diversity of peoples and opinions in these countries–combatting the monolithic understanding many U.S. citizens hold of these countries from polarizing media headlines.
