Handmaids Tale Protesters

In recent protests all over the world, masses of women have dressed as Handmaids in red robes and white bonnets to silently point out that what they are protesting is associated with the oppression of women. Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel The Handmaid’s Tale from 1985 features oppressed characters called Handmaids whose primary purpose in life is to provide married couples with children when they cannot bear their own. Their rights have been completely stripped away, and they do not even own their own bodies. These characters always dress in the same red robes and white bonnets to distinguish themselves as subjugated by men’s rule. In a not dissimilar way the women protesting strict abortion laws or the induction of sexist politicians choose to distinguish themselves as strong feminists against oppressive rules by dressing this way. Appearing as Handmaids at protests is a brilliant strategy; the protestors are modest and silent, but what they wear speaks volumes.
