Harmonic Bridge

All that is required to reclaim space for the public is sound—not even a song—only a tone. Bruce Odland & Sam Auinger installation Harmonic Bridge transforms the vibrations of an overpass into the tone C through tuning tubes, relaying the sound to concrete loudspeakers in the space below. Instead of reminding passers-by of the concrete alienation of the highway, the sound changes the space by pacifying the noise. Pedestrians who were once all-too-eager to scurry underneath the space as fast as possible now slow down, relaxed by the sound. When someone is presented by an unusual stimulus in a known space (like that of the Harmonic Bridge), they are forced to reevaluate their surroundings. This remakes their idea of the space and opens them up to its continual reevaluation. In this way a sound can be a tool for democracy.
