Nowadays, it seems like everything is commodified – from the products we buy to the omnipresent commercial media we consume. In Thomas Hirschhorn’s Too Too-Much Much, the impact of this constant consumption is visualized. Thomas Hirschhorn filled a space in the Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens to the brim with material products. Soda cans, computers, couches, mannequins – you name it. The excess is overwhelming, verging on suffocating. The space is reminiscent of homes from TLC’s hit show “Hoarding: Buried Alive.” The piece, then, draws attention to the impact of consumption on the human psyche. We are constantly bombarded with messages to consume – and to consume excessively. Ironically, even excessive consumption has been spun into something to consume, à la TLC. Hirschhorn’s work criticizes this facet of our society, and works to jolt viewers’ understanding of the material world around them.
