Just last week on Wednesday, September 12, 2018, a group of Cuban artists released a ten-point manifesto in response to legislation that will restrict individual cultural activity. Decree 349 will allow authorities to confiscate property and material, as well as give them the power to prevent unauthorized cultural events from taking place. This new legislation is a further step towards complete control of individual freedoms. The manifesto, written by artists Tania Brugurea, Laritza Diversant, Coco Fusco, Nuñez Leyva and Enrique Risco, demands for conversation with officials and government representation for artists. It attacks the government for controlling basic freedoms and threating the lives and well being of artists. Several protests have broken out against the decree as well with some protesters being arrested. The manifesto is an expression of individual thought that aims to ensure that artist’s voices are accounted for in a centralized government.
