Open up any major editorial magazine and you will see skinny mostly white men and women. The men usually dominate any frame they are apart of and you don’t get any sense of who these people truly are. Open Martine Gutierrez’s “Indigenous Woman”magazine and you are faced with photographs of Gutierrez herself. The Latinx transgender artist plays the role of a number of famous models. But, she does so while showing herself as a proud indigenous woman. Men in this magazine are only shown as mannequins or rag dolls. She also transformed several ads into ones that call attention to the male and white dominated world that is fashion. The images make you stop and think about ad culture and its attempt to control our idea of beauty.
