Memento Mori (2013), Bonita Ely

on

Bonita Ely’s project for documenta 14 “Memento Mori” combines the traumatic consequences of war and displacement on one hand and environmental pollution on the other, demonstrating the interdependence within these two systems. Her installation “Interior Decoration” draws attention to the chronic and intergenerational effects of post-traumatic stress disorder as an outcome of war. Ely renders intimate bedroom furniture unrecognizable by making them into a war memorial, placing emphasis on the penetrative and constant effects war can have on families and households. By re-contextualizing household furniture, Ely draws attention to the many different people who suffer from the atrocities of war – even those who never went into combat. Ely also emphasizes those displaced by war, shedding light upon people whose voices often disappear once they have lost their “war hero” status. She questions which aspects of life are discussed publicly and which ones, regardless of their public implications, remain in the private sphere.
