The #metoo movement is a viral movement that developed on social media in 2017, particularly within prominent Hollywood circles. The movement combats sexual assault, particularly against those in power who abuse their power towards inappropriate sexual ends. The movement incorporated visual aspects such as black pins and badges that people wore to spread awareness, however, the largest factor in visibility was through the way the hashtag spread through celebrity presences online. The vulnerability it encouraged in prominent figures that already dominate the headlines allowed for mounting pressure against those accused of misconduct through widespread awareness. This created a more accepting atmosphere for survivors to discuss their traumas, and a far less tolerant atmosphere for perpetrators. Because the movement began with those that hold social power in the United States through their celebrity status, it was more easily legitimized and thus provided support to those who felt as though they would not be heard to come forward with their stories.
