The High Line markets itself as a public space for New Yorkers to gather as a community above city streets. It aims to activate public space by engaging New Yorkers and tourists alike in city culture. The High Line believes that art is fundamental to creating a truly public space, as it creates common interest amongst those who inhabit it. Temporary, site-specific installations are commissioned by the High Line on a rotating basis. These artworks are often political, addressing topics like immigration, mass incarceration, climate change, and women’s rights. The works are also typically large-scale, and meant to be visible from both the High Line and the surrounding neighborhoods below. In this way, the High Line challenges the boundaries of public space by using its platform to lift up artwork, amplify its messages, and create commonality between those on the High Line and those on the streets.
