As many immigrants and refugees flee from the violence, poverty, or oppressive governments of their home countries, they run into barriers that make gaining entry into other countries very difficult. Strict border security and xenophobia block immigrants from entry and make them feel unwelcome. The NSK acts as a different kind of nation by being accessible to all. It is transnational, existing in time rather than on territory. It redefines what it means to be part of a nation by distinguishing its membership not by any set characteristics—what the people look like or where they are from—but by its inherent multiplicity. The NSK State Pavilion in Venice documents the experiences of numerous immigrants from around the world, having allowed them to tell their stories.
