Rebecca Sugar, through her show Steven Universe, provides viewers young and old the opportunity to wrestle with ideas of consent, abuse, and trauma through the experiences of the Crystal Gems. Steven Universe is an animated TV show in an alternate world where non-binary femme magical aliens, along with Steven, a ten year-old human alien-human hybrid, defend Earth against invasion. The adventures of each episode center around how the Crystal Gems learn how to confront real-world conflict, communicate effectively, and live a joyful compassionate life. Rebecca Sugar, as Cartoon Network’s first female lead creator, birthed a world of normalized queer & trans utopias. It is spearheading a new kind of children’s television that takes its educational influence seriously, centered difficult but necessary conversations. It is not a place or a show where characters come to terms with “deviant sexual attraction,” but instead where the actions and feelings of each character are normal, validated, and nurtured by virtue of existing.
