Sophie Sandberg, creator of Instagram account @catcallsofnyc, uses sidewalk chalk to denormalize catcalling and street harassment. Sandberg invites women to share quotes from their street harassers and the locations in which they were catcalled. Sandberg then revisits these sites of harassment, writing a quote from a woman’s story in brightly colored chalk. She tags each quote with #STOPSTREETHARASSMENT and her Instagram handle. Sandberg’s account has inspired offshoots globally, with women across the world joining in on these sidewalk chalk reclamations. In writing down these lewd statements, Sandberg disrupts the normalcy of catcalling. Sandberg makes the statements unavoidable: they confront all who walk past them. In publicizing these catcalls, Sandberg then exposes an evil that the (patriarchal) public has willed invisible.
