Superilles

Barcelona’s Superilles, or superblocks, take back the streets for the people. When cars first became mass produced in 1901, cities started to change. Where roads once were heterogeneous spaces filled with pedestrians, horses, entertainers, and salesmen, the advent of car-society defined the road for only itself. With it we lost an important space for discussion, debate, and democracy, not to mention peace-and-quiet. Now, Barcelona has decided to take back its streets. By appropriating around 60% of it’s streets for pedestrian-only zones, the city hopes to cut down on noise pollution, air pollution, and accidents. In the place of roads, chairs, play structures and gardens divide buildings. People are incentivised to talk to each other. In a world where cities seem to be capitalist neoliberal playgrounds, the superblock project is a radical move in the opposite direction.
