Visual confrontation can be a successful way to approach gaining attention democratically. Scabby, very large blow-up rat, is commonly used in urban areas where public transportation is substantial. Born in the 1990s out of Chicago, the inflated Scabby refers to a union strike underway. Workers will inflate the rat at their branch of public transit; the rat, stands in for a collective, and promotes the use of hiring union workers within this public service field. In addition to promoting, Scabby as interferes with the normal flow of life. These workers are not working, they are protesting and using Scabby as a tool that’s purposefully imposing and hard to ignore. This is an artful tool for addressing an issue of greater societal concern. In general, the use of symbols can be very effective, protests are often accompanied by pins, or images, and this rat is a successful theatrical presence that lets the community know about problems and essential role of unions within that democratic society.
