The Women’s Action Coalition (WAC) was a feminist group that worked to take action to address the barriers restraining women’s rights. The group was founded following the appointment of Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court despite Anita Hill’s testimony that Thomas had assaulted her. In response to actions and institutions that perpetuate the silencing of women, similarly frustrated women joined together to provide a space for the discussion of their dissatisfactions with the current social structures. They also used this common space to organize forms of collective action that helped address the issues they were facing. In 1992 the Guerilla Girls, a group of feminist artist activists, and the WAC joined together outside of the SoHo Guggenheim Museum to protest the underrepresentation of women artists in the Guggenheim’s collections and exhibitions. This demonstration forced both and public and institution to recognize the structures preventing women’s voices from being heard.
