Yayoi Kusama staged the performance piece, Anatomic Explosion on Wall Street, in front of the New York Stock Exchange in October of 1968. Kusama hired four dancers to dance nude in front of the building while the artist painted dots across their bodies. The work was a protest against the Vietnam War and the capitalist engine behind it. Kusama issued a press release before the work began and contacted reporters to document the process, thus repurposing mass media for her message rather than the typical reports on the war at the time. In addition, by staging such a shocking sight in the streets of New York, she disrupted the normal order of the everyday and in doing so, drew attention to a wider audience than those who would typically go to an art institution, thus broadening her public and her message.
