Dropping a Han Dynasty Urn, Ai Weiwei

on

Ai Weiwei destroyed an authentic Han Dynasty Urn. This was not just a theoretical, or representative, eradication like so much art is; Weiwei literally broke the history that he does not agree with, which speaks to a greater political message. This provocative action represents how artist can lead to wonderfully captivating conceptual artworks. Weiwei brought attention to historically ingrained cultural power structures by literally destroying a piece of that history in 1995. Dropping a Han Dynasty Urn was an intentionally debatable and shocking act. An aspect of this piece was being in direct response to the state of Communist China and how this structure propagates the notion of a new and better culture. Weiwei’s performance exposes the hypocrisy of both an old, or ancient, government and the new one. The artist is employing a more modern artistic approach of not just invoking a concept but being the thing itself; he it literally destroying history as an artistic and political act.
