What better way to physically represent a problematic democracy than turning it into a glorified shit hole. America, by Maurizio Cattelan in 2016, is a fully functioning 18k gold toilet installed in the Guggenheim Museum as a long-term sculptural performance and interactive art piece. The toilet was placed in the museum’s single stall gender-neutral bathroom and thousands of visitors waited in line to relieve themselves on the golden throne. Although this work does not really do anything, it does comically shed light on America’s societal state. In fact, this piece opened shortly after Trump was elected president, an implanted meaning that will, perhaps, be forever tied to the 18k toilet. For Rancière, for example, it’s not about stirring democratic action, a breach of the sensible is, in fact, the most democratic work of all. What Cattelan is doing, is making the viewer rethink the normalized and institutionalized state of the world, through, arguably, one of the most intimate daily actions possible, relieving one’s self.
