A Different View of Pakistan

on

Photographer Danial Shah is reconstructing Pakistan’s narrative by choosing to photograph scenes of the country that shed light on its beauty and richness. No country should ever be reduced to one narrative, but when a place like Pakistan is faced with so much violence and controversy, it can be difficult to illuminate the layers beneath its negative image. Shah’s photographs therefore attempt to uncover some of the hidden gems of the country, employing hope and beauty as methods to recontextualize Pakistan’s landscape and cultural crossover. The artist himself speaks of seeing Pakistan anew after having completed the project. These photos therefore represent a departure from how the artist was taught to see Pakistan, and so they can hopefully spread a new awareness of the richness and diversity of the country — both of its lands and of its people — to others. While these photos cannot eradicate the problems within Pakistan, they illuminate a different side of country, reminding us that there are often hidden narratives waiting to be uncovered.
