Artist Sujatro Ghosh is using his camera to question the protection of women in India. In a country that provides greater protection for its cows than for its women, Ghosh starkly draws attention to these lopsided policies through his unnerving photographs. After obtaining a cow mask during a trip to New York and returning to India, he asked female friends and acquaintances to pose all over Delhi, wearing the mask. He posed these cow-faced women on residential streets, next to governmental buildings, in front of tourist hotspots, and in common gathering spaces. By inserting them into the public sphere, Ghosh creates moments of confusion and disruption. He forces people to confront the presence of a woman wearing a cow mask — is she more human or more animal? And what does this mean in terms of her protection under the law? This is what we must ask ourselves as we reflect on the laws in India that give more agency to cows than to women.
