Adrian Piper’s Catalysis Series

on

From 1970-1973, Adrian Piper performed seven pieces that constituted her Catalysis Series. Piper would go about her daily life and break into these public performances where she would display appalling or repulsive behavior in order to disrupt the social norms of whatever location she was in. Her goal was to shock the unsuspecting audience and get them to think about why certain actions are acceptable or taboo depending on the location. The performances in Catalysis Series are meant to make the viewers uncomfortable, which then prompts the question as to why certain actions being performed by this unassuming teenager at the time make people uncomfortable. The agency of the artist, through her works, is transferred to the audience; she catalyzes people to react in some way, compels them to reflect upon the social norms of their lived experiences and perhaps inspires them to push against the status quo.
