By declaring oneself a United States citizen inside the borders of this work, this illustrates that the Constitution, the document that determines who becomes a citizen, illegitimate. In the safety of the museum, the viewer can play with the idea of stepping inside or out, bringing the control back to themselves. However, it is important to realize that it is the museum that allows this work to exist, but one can imagine and see in the media the horrors of what happens when one cannot choose their citizenship status. This work also confirms that there are many places outside of that box where the law was not applied and the outcome was not positive, where the law is undermined for the sake of an unwritten law, for boxes constructed of tape that declare one not a citizen, but an intruder.
