on

Cildo Meireles’ 1970 conceptual work, Insertions into Ideological Circuits: Coca-Cola Project explore the notion and exchange of goods, bringing attention to how wealth and power are manifested in the circulation of everyday bought objects. For Coca Cola Project, Meireles took Coca-Cola bottles and modified them by adding questions, slogans or illustrations in a font and color that mimicked the inscriptions made by the company. Meireles released 1,000 bottles back into circulation. Meireles, at the time, was working under constant threats of violent censorship from the military dictatorship that had been established in Brazil in March 1964. By stamping messages of bottles, Meireles created a new system for the distribution and exchange of information that evaded state censorship. This work also facilitates the circulation of views and commentary, encouraging those who interact with the bottles to take time to think about the messages they hold.
