As soon as person enters a prison as an inmate their identity is stripped clean. They are pushed into a society where all aspects of their lives are controlled all the way down to the information they are allowed to engage with. Individuality is suppressed and discouraged. Artist, Daniel McCarthy Clifford exposed this forced cultural similarity through a display of the banned literature in prisons. The Section of Disapproved Booksis open for anyone to browse at The Weisman Art Museum. The only thing the books have in common is that fact that they are banned from prisons. The collection of books not only represents the lack of individual freedom within prisons, but also the idea that prisoners are forced to have only prescribed traits in common through prison rules. Individual identity is not allowed to be expressed and therefore, inmates are not able to connect through shared interests, backgrounds or cultures.
