Demolished in 2014, 5pointz, was a run-down industrial building and artist studio space famous for its exterior graffiti. Although since the 90s it was rented as a studio space for artists, the building’s real function was more akin to a graffiti museum. In protest to it’s whitewashing and redevelopment, artist Ann Lewis hung giant construction tape that read “GENTRIFICATION IN PROCESS” on the building’s facade. As part of her ongoing project, Define Progress, Lewis uses this tape to highlight community destruction through gentrification. Through this construction tape, onlookers associate “gentrification” to distinct examples. Tying these buildings together gives communities an idea of what to fight—it questions the definition of good progress. By taping off buildings with community use, Lewis also highlights the inhumanity of capitalism; 5pointz had priceless social value to the graffiti community but was demolished due to its monetary value.
