With Edible Estates, artist Fritz Haag asks property owners to use their private land for public good. The organization focuses on repurposing domestic front lawns into public gardens, so communities can grow their own food. Private property owners then give over their land to public use, rejecting the neoliberalist concept that land should be amassed and unused, simply manicured for show, and existing as a status symbol rather than put to use. Instead, Edible Estates endeavors to get communities back in touch with the environment, to promote sustainable habits, and to foster a sense of community through gardening and cooking. Even the smallest plots of land can be used. With this project, Edible Estates asks the public to reconsider: why is land valuable, and what makes some land plots more desirable than others? Why is land privatized? And most importantly: why and how are we complicit in a wasteful system?
