This simple yet jarring billboard of an empty bed reminds viewers about the tangible reality of loss, of the literal and metaphorical depressions a person creates in their lifetime. Felix Gonzalez-Torres publicly awakens the world from its political slumber to realize that all of the protests and activism against the spread of HIV/AIDS and the degradation of those with HIV/AIDS only target what is happening at the moment. What happens after AIDS? What happens when loved ones leave their clothes in the closet and the shape of their head is still carried by their pillow? This is what Gonzalez-Torres wants the public to know by opening up a private space and creating this billboard. He asks those on the streets fighting AIDS to rally not only for those who have been affected, but those who have been left behind to watch their friends and loved ones perish.
