Mark Ruwedel, Crossing #14, 2005

on

The trials and tribulations that it takes to leave one’s home in search of a better future can be characterized in the symbolism behind a single Guatemalan passport left at the border between Mexico and the United States. This changes the viewer’s perception of home, that a simple small book can be neglected, but home is carried within the hearts of whomever this passport belongs to. A passport is a sacred holder of identity and would never be discarded unless in the most extreme circumstances. The kind of instances that would warrant a forgotten passport would be the perilous journey to arrive in the United States. Ruwedel photographs the aftermath of the crossing as it illustrates a literal disconnection to what was once home into a land that might be extremely foreign. This displays the utter stamina it takes to leave behind the familiar for what might be the unfamiliar despite its insurmountable unknown weight.
