This installation brought people together through their shared understanding of a barbershop and its downfalls while holding a public for the community to want to change this aspect of their culture. Instead of just telling his community of what was wrong with barbershop culture, Osorio held spaces for them to really examine the work and come to solutions on their own. A barbershop is a place of masculinity and oftentimes becomes a center where men can only subscribe to the heteronormativity of maleness. This mixed media installation “feminizes” the barbershop, specifically the Latino barbershop, the integral part of many men’s social sphere, by adorning a chair with dollies and roses. A Puerto Rican flag in the center and pictures of Latino men in seemingly macho poses, Osorio creates a space that explicitly criticizes the basis of barbershops in his cultures while allowing for Puerto Ricans to indulge in workshops and artistic collaborations.
