The Guerrilla Girls are a feminist organization that seek to promote gender and racial equality within the art world. The members of the group are anonymous and adopt codenames of famous female artists. This anonymity serves to protect their identity as well as highlight the content of their message rather than the source. Their propagandistic artwork exposes the hegemonic white masculinity within the arts through easily comprehended statistics of representation within galleries and museums. These statistics are disseminated into the public via posters, billboards, protests or flyers which maintain an identifiable signature style and thus a visual “branding” they can associate with their message. Many of their tactics draw upon notions of what is commonly referred to as “call out culture,” through which they draw attention to prominent white, male members of the art community and their complicity with the disparities in representation. This leads to a climate in which passivity is not tolerated. While it is important to note that the Guerrilla Girls have faced public backlash due to lack of internal diversity and whitewashing, the tactics through which they disperse information have proven to be effective.
