Project Semicolon is a non-profit organization that focuses on mental health and suicide awareness and prevention. A large part of their public outreach is through encouraging individuals to tattoo a semicolon (;) onto their bodies as a sign of solidarity with those who are affected by mental illness or suicide. The tattoos provide a visual manifestation of support for often very isolating conditions. This helps contribute to a sense of community and belonging through the identification of others in similar situations with the recognizable semicolon image. People are encouraged to share photos of their tattoos over social media, thus creating a network of emotional support regardless of whether or not one chooses to participate in the actual tattooing itself. In doing so, they also establish the public as a space to discuss mental health and suicide, advancing conversations about what it is and how it impacts people. This ultimately shifts the silencing stigmas against these topics towards more productive awareness and discussion in a public arena.
