Want to talk about women? Let’s talk about vaginas. In front of a solely female audience, artist Carolee Schneemann read an interaction with a sexist man aloud as she pulled the typed up encounter out from a scroll tucked away in her vagina. Enabling shock is an impactful method of democratic action. At first glance the performance seems somewhat grotesque, like sexist acts. But, there’s nothing involved in this activity that isn’t natural, instead the performance objectifies the use of natural tools because we need to normalise the vagina. This is Scheuermann’s intention, to bombard the viewer with discomfort through the use of something common and, yet, implicit. Being impacted by misogyny is poignant, it’s a very intimate sort of attack. So,  Schneemann is combatting that through the most intimate means possible; her naked, vulnerable, interior and exterior form.
