Social media can be used as a tool to combat terrorism. The slogan #JeSuisCharlie became a worldwide phenomenon after Islamic terrorists shot and killed 12 satirists for the French comic newspaper, Charlie Hebdo, in 2015. This trending hashtag  overtook popular culture and stood to promote free speech and freedom of the press. Media has given people the ability to be aware of incidents that are occurring all around the world at all times. Furthermore, social media has allowed for this “trending” culture where a simple hashtag can stand for one’s political position and put pressure on an administration. #JeSuisCharlie represented standing in support of the fallen writers and was also accompanied by messages like #PrayForParis. Like an advertisement, hashtags have the ability to become promotional or solidarity slogans that stand for a political position and can be useful for an event’s exposure. Social media can be a powerful tool for spreading the word.
