Josephine Meckseper, CDU-CSU (2001)

Using the imagery of high fashion advertising, Josephine Meckseper mounts a potent attack against the corruption of German politics. Easily mistakable for a fashion advertisement, Josephine Meckseper’s glossy photographic print exudes wealth, power, and influence. In the foreground, two almost identical women dressed in evening wear are posed together on a chaise lounge. Surrounded by a sea of leather, fur, marble, and satin, they embody a commodity culture that is firmly elite. However, one has to look closely at this display of excess to notice the lettering adorning the weighty gold chains around the two women’s necks. The chains read CDU and CSU, the acronyms of two German right-wing political parties. By calling out a culture of materialism that is inextricably chained to political influence, Meckseper illustrates a world in which political power has become a commodity, just like a leather chair or a fur rug.
