Fallen Fruit is a Los Angeles based artist’s collaboration that focuses on the relationships between fruit and urban space, citizenship, and community. In their ongoing project Public Fruit Jam, Fallen Fruit invites the public to bring homegrown or street-picked fruit and participate in communal jam making. All different kinds of fruit are accepted, and none of the participants work from a recipe. Therefore, to produce jam, people must negotiate and discuss what kind of jam to make and how to make it. This process encourages collaboration, cooperation, and compromise, while also facilitating conversations between people who might not ordinarily come into contact with each other. These conversations make possible mutual understanding and shared learning. This process of discussion and jam production means that many different ideas contribute to the final product. While it may seem trivial, the collective production of jam helps build and preserve (ha!) democratic processes that are foundational to our government.
