Women on Waves is a Dutch pro-choice NGO created in 1999 focused on making reproductive heath services—particularly non-surgical abortion procedures—available to women in countries with restrictive laws regarding female reproductive rights. When A Woman on Waves boat visits a country, the members of the organization take women onboard and sail out to international waters where procedures can legally be completed. This organization makes information and procedures available to all women, instead of those privileged enough to live in a country that accepts women’s’ right to privacy. It expands equality for women across the globe, making information and medical services accessible to a broader population. It works within a loophole in laws that have been established by a white male majority to offer women a choice regarding their own body and their future.
