By collectively committing to living out a fiction, a local residents’ association in Hamburg, Germany, in collaboration with artist Christoph Schäfer, staged a unique form of occupation. After getting wind of the city’s plan to sell a vacant lot in their low-income neighborhood to high-rise developers, residents rallied together to fight against the privatization of one of their community’s few remaining public spaces. However, rather than grabbing picket signs and megaphones, they simply pretended as if the lot was actually being developed into a public park. The fictional park became the site of picnics, festivals, and exhibitions, all of which demonstrated the cultural richness of their community. The residents even built a mobile planning container, from which they managed the occupation, solicited feedback from their community, and informed visitors about their work. By acting out the fiction long enough, fiction eventually became reality. The city abandoned its plans, and built the public park.
