Taking Back the Streets

#WhyLoiter (2015–Present)

When a group of young women in Mumbai decided that they were fed up with feeling unsafe to walk the city streets at night, they staged an occupation that actively disrupted the normal flow of life in the city. At night, Mumbai’s public spaces become occupied almost entirely by male bodies, forcing women to retreat to the private sphere. So, a group of women decided that they would take back the night. Once a month, the women meet at midnight to deliberately loiter in the streets of Mumbai, taking up space as they please. The movement has since also been adopted by gender nonconforming folks, for whom the streets at night are also unsafe. Together, these silent protesters alter the social geography of public space. By inserting their bodies into space that is privatized by male bodies, they hope to actively democratize the public sphere.
