Immigration will always result in encounters between those who have lived in the area and those who are new to the area. These interactions can be quite positive; they enable both parties to learn from the other and engage in cultural exchange. In 2016, Olafur Eliasson set up an artistic workshop in Vienna for refugees, asylum seekers, students, and members of the public to construct stackable, green light lanterns. People from all over the world were brought together to take part in a shared creative project. The lanterns are then sold to those who wish to display them in their homes as emblems of hospitality–a particularly meaningful gesture, since refugees are vulnerable to deportation and other acts of prejudice, and need to know where to find a safe environment. Proceeds from the project go to organizations benefitting refugees. In addition, the workshop helps lighten the difficulties of arriving in a new country by offering language courses.
