Pianos on the Parade is a project created by the Minneapolis Downtown Council to make playing music more accessible and a shared public experience. Through this project, pianos uniquely designed by local artists were placed in a variety of public spaces throughout Minneapolis. I believe that the installation of pianos throughout the cityscape allows for people to come together and commune over the beauty of music. This music pulls people out of their daily bubble and creates interactions whether formal or informal. It creates a way that is accessible for anyone to play the piano in any style. This forms a freedom of sonic expression in public spaces where anyone nearby can hear. Even if it does not create a direct interaction, the participant is still sonically communicating with those in hearing distance. Pianos on Parade creates a collective sound of all the people of Minneapolis.
