Daniel McCarthy wanted to investigate how prisoners across the US have been stripped of their identity through the banning of certain books from U.S. incarceration sites. Through this initial exploration, McCarthy went onto discover more than 400 pieces of literature that have been removed from prisons and with discovery came his installation at the Weisman Art Museum. The Section of Disapproved Books creates a collection of literature dealing with all sorts of topics ranging from police brutality to cultural history to the arts. This installation brings people in contact with these books in order create an enlightened understanding of the issues of censorship within the prison system. Additionally, this piece brings viewers together, creating communal dialogue around oppression, governmental censorship, and identity loss. Through engagement with the material and discussions with other museum visitors, McCarthy doesn’t hope that these issues just get talked about but inspire visitors to enact and push for change.
