In the U.S. when we hear the word Afghanistan, images from nightly new stories and newspapers come to mind. The images are usually of destruction and war. In the Trump era the term “fake news” is thrown around casually. But what does it actually mean to critique the media’s representation of the world around us? Trump does so in a narcissistic fashion, angered that they didn’t show his good side. The artist Francis Alÿs does so through artful film  in his piece, Reel/Unreel,that follows groups of children through Kabul, Afghan. Instead of war, Alÿs gives us images of kids pushing around reels of film like a game. They are laughing and enjoying the game as they run wild in Kabul, which is waste ridden and almost crumbling. The film is self-reflexive. It shows us an alternate view of Afghanistan, while also showing awareness that this is a film that was cut and edited. Alÿs ends the film with the words “Cinema: everything else is imaginary”.
